Remove lacquer from Ultimate Sporter stock
I believe the Ultimate Sporter stock is lacquered , so ongoing maintenance is a wipe with at best a car polish to add a shine, however no way to make it really look its best. As I am seeing a "smudge" appear where my thumb sits on top on top of grip, I keep wondering about removing the lacquer and oiling it .. any one done this before ? Any Pointers on best way to do it or do I just get a custom stock made

Re: Remove lacquer from Ultimate Sporter stock
Thanks to the EU ban, paint stripper is not what it was unfortunately. My thick acrylic laquer would be tough to remove with the new formulations I reckon.
Edit: "Paramose" is still available with the original dimethyl chloride but you have to be (or know down the pub) a registered professional
It also costs a fortune.

Here, in Canada, I use easy off oven cleaner. It work very well, can be found in any grocery store and is inexpensive. Just make sue you are wearing rubber gloves.

Re: Remove lacquer from Ultimate Sporter stock
With any sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) based cleaner there is a possibility of darkening of the wood. I don't know about walnut but mahogany type hardwoods will go very dark brown. What wood have you used it on Grenade?
Re: Remove lacquer from Ultimate Sporter stock
I've used it on walnut, beech and laminated wood stocks. I haven't noticed that the wood was darker. I've also used it to remove varnish from oak stair banisters. I've used Tru-oil and linseed oil as a finish to these gun stocks. The stocks do darken with multiple applications of these two oils.
I've just purchased an HFT 500 ( same stock as the ultimate Sporter). This winter I'm going to try and shape the cheek piece to make it fit me better. I'll see how this work out.
