Just wondering what the real life difference is between a 12lb gun and an fac gun ...
does the extra power come at a cost of accuracy..
and how much extra effective range would you get from an fac over a 12pounder

Re: Fac vs 12lb
It allows a .22 to have a similar trajectory as a .177. The maximum I would shoot the FAC one is about 60 yards.

As above, .22 with a similar if not flatter trajectory than a .177
As for hunting distance you can shoot accurately out to 100 yards if you put the practice in and only from a bipod.
At 100 yards many fac Air Rifles are still retaining 12ft/lb.
Even with a 12ft/lb .177 you can get clean kills out to 80 yards if you're competent.
Yesterday I took a magpie cleanly at 80 yards with my s400f .177 using Jsb Heavies 10.4 grain pellets, not a head shot but through the vital organs. Did a backflip and was dead before hitting the ground.

i had a .22 on ticket years ago running at 24 ft/lbs. it gave exactly the same trajectory performance as my .177 s400, but with a bit more wallop. even with the extra wallop, it didnt kill stuff any more dead than my sub 12 .177
i often hear people say .177 is a waste of time at fac levels, but a mate of mine had one running at around 17 ft/lbs if my memory serves well. the only thing i can say is wow, it was an absolute death laser for rabbits he reckoned that much above 17 ft/lbs in .177, the pellets started to get unstable. was certainly accurate at 17

Re: Fac vs 12lb
I’m all good thanks. I got a 410 extra in .22 as I thought it would buck the wind a little bit better. Certainly haven’t killed any more or better than the sub 12. I ended up taking game to the 60 yard mark and not much further.
Really it’s a wasted slot on my ticket but it’s always good to have if I need to fill it for something new.

in fairness ray, i used to really enjoy shooting mine, and it did give extra, usable range if neededBlackbaronfish wrote: ↑Sat Sep 14, 2019 10:23 amI’m all good thanks. Maximum velocity while retaining accuracy is usually reckoned to be around 920-950fps. This puts maximum useful power levels at about 16-18ft lb in .177 and 32-36ft lb in .22 depending on pellet weight. I can't tell you from personal experience but, theoretically, you should be able to get about 20% more range with fac than you'd get from a .177 shooting 8.44gr pellets at 770-780fps.
To get the same trajectory as a .177 you need about twice as much power in .22.

Re: Fac vs 12lb
aye up tony, yeah once pellets go north of 900fps they start becoming unstable. the .177 doing 17 ft/lbs was a laser, but iirc he only got about 15 usable shots. my .22 was 24 ft/lbs mainly for shot count reasons, the fact that it was accurate, had a sweet spot starting at 760 peaking at 770 and back to 760 over 20 shots, and gave the same trajectory as my s400 sub 12 .177 was a bonus matetonyc wrote: ↑Sun Sep 15, 2019 8:12 pmMaximum velocity while retaining accuracy is usually reckoned to be around 920-950fps. not sure what shot count ray gets on his ''extra'', but shot count in fac can be a problem. i had a go of an fac gun claiming 35 shots, i tried 35 shots and shot a ragged 1 inch slot on the target. i chrono'd it, and found it had 15 usable shots, that would shoot a ragged 1 holer
i much prefer my shot count of my 400 @ sub 12 these days
