Now I'll 'fess up to generally liking the programme, though some of the antics they get up to are a bit far fetched IMHO. Yes, there is a strong focus on cars that 99.9% of us will never drive (let alone own) but is that such a bad thing? Some of the locations they go to are places we would never normally get to see on telly, let alone visit; again, is that a bad thing? I for one have a hankering to drive the Col de Turini or visit the Stelvio Pass - not in some piece of automotive exotica, the mighty Mondeo or something similar will suffice. As for JC (the younger one) - yes he can be a total ar5e, an opinionated buffoon and about as non PC as you can get but, in my view, he had something no other mainstream presenter has had for a long time, the 'nads to voice his opinion - maybe to be deliberately controversial (thus attracting publicity), maybe not. One thing's for sure - the conversation in the office on a Monday morning will not be the same!

Long term what is the BBC to to? Buy JC out and relaunch with a new team? Can't see that happening too soon. Replace JC with another presenter? In which case who? Sabine Schmitz would get my vote ;) Another with potential would be Brian Johnstone (though age and AC/DC commitments could go against him).

Both are fundamentally catering to / targeting the same segment of society

As I see it he's a guy with strong opinions who's not afraid to voice them even if they aren't exactly PC, yes he plays the fool a bit which makes him popular with the less able amongst us but he can also do serious if he wants as is evidenced by the documentary he did on the wwII Arctic convoys amongst others. If it turns out he over reacted and punched a guy in an argument then fair enough, he deserves to face the consequences, but when all's said and done he's a TV personality and as such you can't criticise him for playing to his audience (it is his day job after all) and if nothing else at least his antics make a change to the likes of strictly, the voice and I'm a celebrity and their ilk ;)

I have never seen the program in question but read the entire thread up above and it occurred to me that perhaps something else is brewing...over here when a long running program starts to lose it's edge, viewers and most importantly commercial advertisers the "suits" will create a hub bub...the seedier the better and presto, instant viewership as people from all walks of life debate the claims and tune in to see etc etc etc...or just a fitting and memorable end...zp, film critic and advisor to the stars...

personally I don't watch much commercial tv...a couple pbs news, nature and science shows and that's about it...

"...this instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes it can even inspire. but it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. otherwise it's just wires and lights in a box..."...Edward R. Murrow...

The problem is it does revolve around Clarkson, top gear has been franshised around the world with locally grown presenters but those shows failed and those countries have bought the original uk version, iam sorry to say but its the bbc's biggest cash cow
what really annoys me is he says a few off the cuff naughty comments and gets punished
just attend a football match, go to town to a pub or club more racism and drink fueled anger but thats football so its ok, oh and it turns out our justice system watches porn while sitting at the bar
top gear is for steak eating red blooded men not for car enthusiasts, personally i like his left field approach and it makes a refreshing change to the nanny state we live in
theres plenty on the box and in the news that makes my blood boil but my telly is clever becouse i can turn it over or off
