Re: i phone 5s
New updates always get blamed for battery usage especially in the forums. I would make sure all photos etc are moved to your main computer, then return the phone to factory settings and rather than an automatic recovery, manually re-install all your favourite apps from the app store and email accounts and start again.
I am an Android user but occasionally I turn off Google's automatic backup and restore, then reset to factory and manually repopulate. It's surprising how many apps you don't really need again.

Re: i phone 5s
I got myself an iphone 6s from John Lewis for Xmas. Prices plummet as soon ad they stop making them. If I’d waited a week it dropped another £50 grrr!
Look out for the 7’s going cheep soon.
Re the updates, anyone going to ios12.1.2 , if your texts or other mobile functions stop working properly do a Settings, General, Reset, Reset Network Settings.
