David Cameron is being slated for comments to the Queen made on camera, Afghanistan and Nigeria are singled out for being fantastically corrupt. Even the critics accept that actually he is right but criticise him for saying it. Why? If he's telling the truth then he should be applauded for being honest and supported, instead someone has dragged out an unknown Nigerian poet to slag off the PM, where did they drag him up from? What has gone wrong? Is the truth unacceptable? Are we supposed to applaud liars and cheats? (Tony Blair?)

When I came to the UK from India 25 years ago, I got the distinct feeling that I had moved from a country where corruption was in-your-face to a country where it didnt exist. I was to realise in later years that while this country has managed to wipe out corruption at the coal face, the kind of corruption that exists here is the 'megabucks' sort. In India, it would be the traffic police, the front end government officials, the clerks and assistants in low paid jobs who were visibly corrupt. Here in the West it seems to be the lead bankers, very rich leaders of businesses, top end politicians and officials in real power who seem to be creaming it.
If you take a twisted view of it, the 'poor country' way is actually an equaliser of wealth. e.g. Rich man wants to escape his speeding fine - poor policeman makes some money. Over here, the corruption makes the rich get richer and doesnt help the poor much.

Well spoken, never a truer word said. Here in the UK, the simple fact is that the rich and their Political Allies are able to hide their corruption to a greater extent than in many of the developing countries. Sadly, corruption exists at varying levels in every Nation on earth.

You only need to look at the privatisation of all our service industries to realise the level of corruption in this country.
Think about it, they sold the working man the very things he already owned and had paid for through taxes and standing charges. They dressed it up as your chance to join the 'elite' as a shareholder and dividend receiver, they allocated a certain amount of shares to prevent corporations buying the lot in one fell swoop, but after you sold them there was no limit, so the 'elite' ended up with the lions share.

And Raj, you are right, I've paid an Indian traffic cop a small fine for not having the international driving permit, no receipt, but he then goes straight to the nearest bel puri stall and buys lunch with my money. At least he's honest about it.

We live in one of the most corrupt countries in the World - Who had the Polish Prime Minister Wladyslaw Sikorski bumped off during WW2 ? I'll give you a clue... He smoked a cigar and we gave him a state funeral.

working in the oil industry I learned a few hard truths about a lot of African states, oil/gas rig managers need to have lots of ready cash to hand, either the local monopoly stuff or American dollars to oil the wheels regularly with local chiefs/jumped up managers etc etc, pulling the plug on power supplies from the nearest power station was a favourite with them, & no switch back on until you`ve `ponyed` up! these are the kind of regular acts I believe he was referring to, & these people are the very ones coming over to attend the anti corruption meetings we`re about to host!
