had one of these recommended to me, Carhartt are available on amazon & other European sites but just not the one I wanted unfortunately, I had to order my `Jackson` from the states & it arrived 2 weeks later, I immediately went out into strong winds & light rain with the dogs for a couple of hours, being fur lined the heat retention was amazing, waterproof? you bet, although not listed as waterproof, trust me, the cotton weave is so tight I reckon you`d need to be dipped into a tank & left for sometime before it`d leak, indeed, it`s listed as a canvas jacket on some sites! a slightly long `tail` gives it a tiny bit more comfort.
downsides? nope, as far as the coat that is, ordering, well, if you`ve any family in Canada or America I`d get it (from Dungarees.net) sent to them & get them to send it to you & save the £30 import fee I got charged ho hum, still love the jacket though, import tax took the cost up to £160/70 but even at that price, I`m very happy with it. North Face & Berghaus I don`t think could cut it in the field, this will, no problem.
saw one bad review about build quality & Carhartt were so shocked they`d forwarded the man`s comments to their factory, returned the guys money & were `in the process of making repairations to customer trust` with the guy, they (Carhartt) focus very strongly with blue collar workers & build quality is a cornerstone of their ethos & advertising. there`s a huge range to choose from, I`d recommend the Jackson, it`s machine washable & if you`d like one, buy a size down.

We were just talking about Carhartt coats last week at the clay ground. One of the lads bought one and has yet to give it a testing. Don't know what model it was but that one in the picture is no shooting jacket and would'nt lend itself to being used as one i'm afraid. Certainly not for Stalking or particularly Shot gunning. However as an every day "throw on coat" it may well be a cracking buy!!!

A size down? That guy needs a size up! The sleeves are too short for his arm length.

Not a field jacket Wastrel. No button or press stud down flap to go over the zip or so it seems in the picture. Amazing the amount of wind and rain that can penetrate a zip. The cuffs have not got anything to reduce them down to wrist tight. Again essential in the field and bad conditions to stop draughts. The Yanks do make some good out door gear (well the Mexicans or Chinese do for them) but it may be a good jacket for nipping down the shopping mall and dashing from the comfort of the pickup and into Walmart to pickup a case of Bud;)

Were both your Barbours Wax ones Wastrel? A Barbour wax jacket needs good under garments pal. They are not designed to keep you warm but they are effective at keeping you dry. The Proof in the pudding certainly is there where they are concerned. However i don't use one for shooting prefering my Seeland keeper jacket. For beating i use my trusty old Barbour Waxy.
When my Keeper Jacket gives up the ghost it'll be Harkila or Musto next. My Harkila Pro Hunter boots are all i wear on my feet now the shooting season is under way. 3 weeks ago up At Galashiels on a Pheasant shoot they certainly did'nt let me down in torrential weather. Did'nt stop the birds from flying though with a 131 bag

they`re both waxed Pat, & I know (believe me I know) a barbour needs a warm under `back up` but in the rain, after 6 hrs (watching Moto GP in Holland) you can`t help but inspect a barbour from time to time to see when it`ll need a re-wax, this coat`ll need no such thing & it`s a dam site warmer than just about anything I`ve ever worn-hence my recommendation to the forum.

30 odd years shooting has taught me a lot about shooting garments Wastrel. Hours spent in the field in driving rain, hail snow and the worst sleet shows any weakness in a garment. If a Barbour waxy leaks mateythen it needs re-proofing end of. As Steve says living near the Factory where they are produced means service is easy. A refurb and re-wax with fast turaround everytime with a fantastic end result. and much more effective than a DIY re-proof with either spray on or hot wax.
I still don't like a waxy for shooting. There are much better alternatives as we have said in previous posts. However for beating a waxy is a great piece of clothing.
i,m sure your coat will be fine but like i say not a suitable shooting garment but as said as an everyday coat i'm sure it'll fit the bill. Hey it'll match your Crocks!!!!! that you wore recently when out on a hike!! I'll see what the lad at our clay club makes of his Carhartt jacket when i drag him out in some foul weather. He reckons it seems good quality though

Well you do right Wastrel. Keep warm because the cold soon saps any enthusiasm for anything. Keep the lower back and kidneys warm. The key is layering to my mind. I don't care what I look like as long as I am warm. You get guys on the range complaining of the cold and one comes on here and even his self acclaimed Adonis good looks won't keep him warm when the wind gets up his jaxxy!!!!

I still miss my old Russian Army greatcoat. Floor length!

Does anyone wear overcoats anymore? I inherited my Grandfathers and he died in 1954 the year I was born. Still going strong. Made to measure by a local tailor circa 1949. Typical 40's styling which requires a trilby or a fedora and a Chicago Piano
