Aye, seen in on the local news tonight Bri. Its not far at all from where I live, there are shallow mine workings all over the area (as there are in many towns). Still, dont fancy one in my back garden

Ahh ... I see why people are so 'downcast'

I would 'baulk' at the sight of the ground dissappearing like that
Speaking of mining terms .... an old time miner in North Staffs once told me this. In the old days, firewood - especially kindling was hard to come by. Miners were encouraged by their wives to shave bits off the supports and props underground ... probably why these sink holes are appearing

Presumably because they were dry and went up quick thereby helping the ladies with lighting the fire. Basically the deal was no wood = no cock !!! Hence the term 'cock wood'.
