cant see todays overpaid so called superstars coping with pitches like that, or even bothering to give it a go

It is a different game altogether

They dont possess the specialised muscle/fitness these days. They'd pull a hamstring or tweak a groin within minutes.
I miss those days of churned up pitches at xmas time.
