major George Hanger rated the `Brown Bess` one of the earliest hand held military firearms, as so hopelessly inaccurate that-
"the safest place to stand when fired would be in front of it" (at 70m admittedly!)
to put this in context, a slinger 1000 years earlier could comfortably hit targets up to 300m, an English longbow archer who could not hit a moving target at 150m would be regarded as a very poor shot indeed!
