just had my bottom blacked

Mon Aug 03, 2015 11:42 pm

my boat's out of the water for blacking, some new anodes, and a chance to look around it for any minor problems in the hull, before they become major problems
i didnt have a hull survey done before i bought the boat, as it had one done 6 months before. it was blacked and put back in the water, although the standard of blacking could best be described as ''not very good, and nowhere near as good as the job i've just had done''
the fella here has given it 3 coats of the best quality blacking available, not the cheap crap that some boatyards use.
he's known as ''tony the miserable'' but to be honest i found him ok after a bit of initial miserableness.
he certainly knows his stuff, and has been a wealth of knowledge, passing on plenty of hints and tips :o

A very neat job,
Good to see you have anodes all along the boat,. mine were only front and back, I didn't know that was not enough until a different boatyard owner pointed out the pitting on the middle section. So 4 new anodes and that prevented the problem getting worse.
Nice boat who was the builder?

Wonderful to see tradional craft being maintained, I had a 1937 gaff cutter for a few years and retain great memories of our voyages.
Do you use a modern anti-fowling or a traditional tar based paint?

aye up ray, he scrapes all the gunge off the side when it comes out, pressure washes it off, then 3 coats of bitumen.

they used black bitumen, the £130 a tin stuff, not the 30 quid a tin stuff that some boatyards use
