the staircase in a castle tower always ran clockwise upwards, the wall on the attackers RHS would encumber his sword arm (most folks being right handed) whilst the defender would have an unhindered RH strike downwards as he ascended the staircase (backwards) defending his family to the last.

That is also why we drive on the left in order to defend ourselves from road robbers with our right hand. Also, your coat buttons so you can get your right hand into the lapelle to reach your sword.
