this is so true, yet every tom, dick and harry claims to make damascus steel knives just because its got a pretty pattern, by that logic I'm going to make some gold coins by colouring them in. sorry if this came over as a rant but this has made my shit itch for years! Some of these knives are beautiful and more akin to art but they are not what they claim, anyone any ideas as to how they get away with it?

It's been romanticized, its appearance closely duplicated and made exclusive by price add in gullibility and there you have it. Much the same for Japanese swords, the making of which was banned in Japan for quite sometime. Though there are a few licensed sword makers who still possess the skill to make them; they aren't entirely hand made, as most if not all use "steam" hammers which effects the metal differently to hand bashing.
They should call it Damascus pattern, not steel.

That at any one time it is estimated that 0.7% of the world population is drunk. This equates to approx 50,000,000.

That's partially true.. Al Pendray worked for many years to try and rediscover Damascus steel. I think it's actually called Wootz, but it could cut a silk scarf thrown in mid air. Al finally came up with his version of Wootz and it did cut the silk scarf. I think Al has passed on and I need to google this to see if he left the formula behind. Just to be clear, we aren't talking about pattern welded steel that modern knife makers call Damascus.

It could be regarded as an act of treason to place a postage stamp Bering the Queens image upside down.
