Although the fastest dog (Greyhound ) is only bested on land by a Cheetah in a sprint, other sighthound breeds (Saluki, Afghan etc) would leave them both for dead over much longer distances, like some long distance flying birds, their breathing is directly linked to the movement of running (or flying) whereby the outer stride induces inward breath, & out on the in stride, some sighthound breeds can run for huge distances at around 40mph someting a Greyhound or Cheetah (or any other dog FTM) couldn't hope to match.

That men used to run cheetahs to exhaustion to catch them. Man runs, cheetah sprints and stops when tired, man keeps running, cheetah runs again etc, man keeps running etc, eventually the cheetah cannot run any more and is exhausted and is netted. This is documented in ancient Egyptian texts on how they caught wild animals for the Pharoahs etc
