What he said :) if its the standard beech stock its varnished so if you want a nice finish you need to strip off the varnish and then start from scratch as far as finishing goes, then ccl ;) Next step back and listen to Geordie, take look at his stock thread and take any advice as a golden opportunity to learn 8-)

I had to strip the creosote of me leg end stock before I stained and oiled it :lol:

The stock I finished carving and checkering a month or so back, all it had was boiled linseed and a polish with 000 wire wool.
it takes a few months to build up the oiled finnish but its worth doing.

I did, very enjoyable job to do. Takes a lot more thinking about than carving the stock.
