Mine starts 14 then 4 more digits. Bought 2016. Possible I guess if the serial is stamped on the body and then stacked for later build. Then as you say stored at Rothery.
Do they make less than 9999 total rifles per year??

Well yes, there's always some guesswork when first trying to decipher a code! My own S400 serial starts 06.... and was sold in Oct. 2007. I suspect that there is a lot of truth in the suggestion that the serial number is allotted when the parts are manufactured so there will always be a delay til they are used in manufacture and presumably there is a record at the factory of when that particular gun was dispatched. It may well be that there is nothing to denote anything more accurate than that, but certainly everything I've seen of models from the first decade this millennium seems to tie in - and development details also fit . Again as an example my own gun comes from an era when the screws were, one by one, being inserted from beneath the action. The manual which came with the gun show two from beneath whereas the gun has only one in this orientation, suggesting remaining stock parts were being used up.

I guess only AA know the whole story and those who have enquired about dating get an answer giving the year only.

Rob.

Hi,
My S400 has Sno 066656, there should be a date on the Air Cylinder mine is 2006.
If your Cylinder is original - it should be pretty close to when the gun was made?
You might need to remove the stock - a good time to check its all clean and dry under there!!!

When I phoned to return my S400 under warranty the first thing AA did was to check date of manufacture. They gave me year and month, which was 5 months prior to my purchase.

You can't get it low enough with the power adjustment screw?... 2 options requiring no new parts:
1. increase firing valve pre-load by winding in the pot,
2. take a coil off the hammer spring (and back out the pot as necessary to increase power if too low).
Mess up on option 2 and you'll have to buy a new spring.

An interesting question, why has the transfer port been drilled out?

The gun may have been fitted with a regulator, since removed. If you check the date on the cylinder and find it is much later than the serial number this would be further evidence. It could be that someone has been playing with the valve and hammer balance, which could mean other parts are not original. Hopefully a simple adjustment on the pot will have it sorted.

Good luck!
