New Ultimate Sporters

Mon May 07, 2018 9:43 am

The new range of Ultimate Sporters have a fill pressure of 250bar this will be for the 12ftlb version also, I thought originally that this fill pressure would be for the FAC versions only, what I am wondering is, how many fills would I be expecting from a 7ltr 300bar bottle?. Rog

If I can find an Excel that will run it I'll have to see if it agrees with first principles. Wont run on mobile excel.
Is the new Ultimate Sporter in their drop down menu?

Rog, if you have the capacity of the new cylinder I'll calculate it for you.

Hi Tony, there is not a lot of information on the new 12ftlb Ultimate, all I have managed to find out is that the fill pressure will be the same as the FAC versions i.e. 250bar, have messaged A/A to find out reg pressure and expected shot count, have no idea of cylinder capacity yet, what I was thinking, if it's A 250bar fill, how often would you be needing to visit the dive shop to run the new gun? I have a BTAS .22 which I fill to 210bar (recommended by Ben) luckily, I have other rifles, which use lower pressures, so still able to use the bottle that is of no use to the BTAS gun once the pressure is down. Sorry this is a bit long winded, I just feel the need to know. Rog

Let's assume the cylinder capacity is the same size as existing. (It may not be as the new reg and valve will likely take up more space than than existing valve and pot even if the overall dimensions are the same.) Then the number of fills we be reduced near enough in direct proportion to the difference in bottle fill pressure and cylinder fill pressure. So if old fill pressure is 190 (300-190=110) and new is filled to 245 (300-245=55) you will get half as many fills. This doesn't allow for air wasted filling the whip, which will be more at high pressure, so you would be maybe another fill short. Allowing for the extra space taken up by the reg it's probably around half as many fills to 250bar.

Of course, you can still keep filling as the bottle falls below 250 but with reduced shot count. You're not missing out until you get less shots than you would get from the old model. If we ignore the question of whether the new sporter's more efficient use of air, when regulated, offsets the old's lower volume per shot released on the upward part of the curve, then point at which the new sporter's shot count falls below the old one's would be when the fill pressure is just a bit higher than the old (allowing for slightly smaller capacity). Looking at it this way, you are still going to get near enough the same number of shots from a bottle - and more consistent ones too!

If they ever bring out a 300 bar rifle you'll only get one fill then back down the dive shop

That's exactly what I was thinking, and as my local dive shop charges £5 for a fill ( and that's 3ltr or 7ltr ) it starts to look quite expensive :? Rog

Before someone else picks it up, I made an error - you will only take half as much air out, but even fewer fills - about one third as many - because of the higher fill pressure. End result is half as many shots (assuming same efficiency) or same number if you continue filling at lower pressures.
