whats the lowest deviation on your springer

Sat Mar 07, 2015 11:17 am

iam trying to get a hw98 to fire smooth and consistent with a very low deviation numbers ,

not worried about the twang sound , thinking of polishing the piston and chamber , tried different pellets ,
any tips would be great,

its still new only had about 100 pellets through it and the divination is about 28 with aa field ( not weighed ) is this average ?

Hi Eddie,
I would expect that to get better. It's still brand new. As the seal and cylinder bed in the variation should drop.

With weighed pellets and run in I would expect low single figure variation.

My prosport before it had the welsh willy would do 5 or 6 fps sometimes it would do 6x 5fps strings and i thought it was my mistake not resetting the combro, with the WW kit which looses the piston weight and hence the damping effect,it has a higher spread around the 9 or 10 mark

thanks to you all for your help,
BUT IVE CHOPPED IT IN for A NEW WALNUT 177 PROSPORT TODAY .

after having my first hw98 of any hw i may self find the air arms walthers springers smoother / easer to strip / and nicer quality and with i bit more modem tec inside ,

do not get me wrong the hw"s are great , and less weight for hunting etc and top shooters,
but for me its the air arms and walthers lgu / lgv

l just could not live with the hw twang and having to tune it to make it more like the air arms and walther is it a bit off putting for me, it shot fine but its what your happy with that counts ,
thanks for your help every one ,

All springers will at some point twang, thats why my prosport has a welsh willy kit in it,but i understand now what makes a twanger and iam sure its caused by the piston been out of control and pellets, greases, barrel tightness, preload can all cause the piston to behave badly, ive got my prosport spot on, the piston drives all the way home with minimal recoil and virtually no piston bounce its like shooting a pcp that has muzzle flip

i have learned a lot about pistons and grease and springs etc over the last 6 months , but i was a bit disappointed how basic in parts the hw"s are given the work time it takes to get in to them,

One of the biggest attractions of the TX/PS line is the ease of takedown. The break barrel HW is a bit of a pain and there's always the chance of nicking the piston seal on a slot or hole even when you think you've deburred them. All my TX's run around a 10 fps spread in 10 shots from the tin. I have one that gets down to 4 some times, but 6 is it's norm with a standard deviation of 1. This is at FAC levels as well and it comes from the barrel since I've tried many set ups and it remains the same.

Dear Eddie
My TX manages to stay within 1.1 m/s with JSB Express running around at 11.8 ft/lbs. No magic beyond the complete de-grease, de-burring, minimal lubrication & v-mach kit (very tight fit on the guides). I did fit a Macarri oversize cocking shoe which may also be contributing something given how much slack there was in the standard one.
Enjoy the PS, the best looking air rifle ever produced.

Here you go Eddie, this was a shot string from my Prosport while I was experimenting with a TbT guide and tophat last year sometime. The pellets were AA Fields in 4.52.
