I want too ask you a question guys how come everyone on site seems to shoot 1.77 instead of .22 for hunting you guys all seam to use the 1.77 for both, i allways thought that 1.77 was better for targets because of the flatter trajectory and distance and .22 for the stopping power and accuracy am i still on the write thinking with this or has it all changed with the pcp's so please post your thoughts on this topic thx guys.

Re: 1.77 versus .22 Question..
It's not about power, with sub 12 it's all about accuracy. accurate shooting is easier with .177 because range finding is not so critical.
It's far easier to put a pellet in the right place at sensible ranges, you can check that by looking at the results from an HFT shoot, a .22 rifle never comes in 1st place.

Re: 1.77 versus .22 Question..
And ever since the dead pigeons and rabbits stopped complaining about the smaller diameter pellet, everyone realised that it is cheaper
Jokes aside, what Timmy said. At about 30 yards, it matters not whether it is .22 or .177, you will kill equally well. So then, it is down to which one can maintain a tighter group and which one is more forgiving with small ranging errors - .177 all the way.
Also, some Speedy Gonzalez quarry have been known to hear a .22 go off, pack their belongings neatly in their travel bags and make an orderly exit before the pellet gets to them. The .177 gets to them at about 200 feet/second quicker

Re: 1.77 versus .22 Question..
At 30 yards the difference in energy between the two is about 1ft/lb, .177 approx 8.3 ft/lbs and .22 approx 9.3 ft/lbs. I used chairgun with a starting energy of 11.6 ft/lbs for both. As above accuracy and a flatter flight for me , although saying that my FAC is a .22

Re: 1.77 versus .22 Question..
I shoot .20 and .177. The .20 is really good but I only use it in daylight. The .177 is my TDR with night vision, easier on the range finding and it knocks a bunny down instantly all the same.

Re: 1.77 versus .22 Question..
So say if you was firing a pellet at say 14 to 20 ft lbs which would out perform 1.77 or .22 has everyone knows, that the higher the velocity and the lighter the pellet the more unstable the trajectory, so would the 1.77 pellet still be fine in those circumstances or would it be all over the place due to pellet weight or would it still have a flat trajectory flight path at those kind of ft lbs, has i am just intrigued at what the 1.77 would do at a higher ft lbs ratio.Plus what kind of distances can you expect from a 1.77.Has i have never used a 1.77 rifle i have allways used .22 but may convert too a 1.77 that is why i am asking these questions. So what raj has said the 1.77 is great at keeping groups its tighter but i have also shot 5 pence groups at 30 and 40 yards with my .22 S200 the worst thing i have found with shooting .22 all of the time is the pellet drop over distances.

Re: 1.77 versus .22 Question..
Accuracy is king! If your accurate at sub12 ranges with a .22 then use it. It's easier to be accurate with a .177 though as range-finding is less critical with the flatter flying .177 and not the 1.77 super slug you mentioned

we are talking sub 12.
If you have an FAC then .22 will almost deffo be what you want..

Re: 1.77 versus .22 Question..
Our FT shooters use the 10+ grain .177 pellets at just under 20 ft. lbs. This is around 900 fps or a little more and they are extremely accurate. If you go above 20 ft. lbs. I guess the .22 would be better. Check out my post a few posts down on TX200 group. That's why .177 works at 12 ft. lbs.

Re: 1.77 versus .22 Question..
This one re-surfaces every so often..the debate .177 v .22 there are differing opinions on the various calibres...personally I,m a dyed in the wool .22 shooter..I,m comfy with the aim points so I use .22. Others will say different..we all have different tastes
