Out in all weather

Sat Dec 12, 2015 10:37 am

Hi all
Just wondering how many of us actually set off out shooting with an air rifle when its actually raining. I know i dont intentionally go out in the rain but I an often out when it starts to rain.
When I shot with my shotguns i would not hesitate to go out in any type of weather. Totaly different mindset shooting with an air rifle to shotguns

Personally no because when it's raining nothing ventures out to be shot at.

I would of done years ago, but sod that now. Like you if it starts to rain when your out that's different, but even then I wont stop out long. I also agree, being out with the shotgun is more appealing when the weather is crap, no sitting or lying down, nice

Few out shooting with air rifles at the range today mind despite the rain (and snow). Dropped in for a chat then on the farm to deliver hampers and a quick walkabout. Agree totally different with a shotgun but mind you there were rat tracks about in the snow here and there so we could have used an air rifle I guess but the barns locked up.

Had about an inch and a half of snow on the car when I set off back. Heavy round the Trimdons and Coxhoe.

Yes and no Kevin. I don;t shoot my air rifles as much these days but if a particular job required a sub 12 air rifle and it happened to be raining then yes i would. Would i venture out in the rain just to pleasure shoot my airguns? then no. My shotguns, C/F and rimfire rifles go out in all weathers simple as. Having said that i hate getting my O/U Ceaser Guerini wet as has happened on my last two game shoots :? For vermin control i take my Beretta Auto and if that gets wet then i'm not so bothered. As with all my guns though they are meticulously dried off and then oiled etc but i do cringe when my O/U gets wet  . I always give the stocks a coat of CCL gunstock wax afterwards as well to eliminate the dullness from getting wet and to restore the sheen as it were. This also helps to protect the woodwork to a degree if your gun gets wet which is often inevitable

It is amazing what a poncho will protect as well and sorry Pat I meant to give you that one today as I have two. You can tuck the wood and action under the poncho.

Aye Ponchos do provide a lot of protection when out in the field Steve. Light and can be packed away in a pocket although not suitable at all for Game shooting,

I have been out in all weathers with air rifles, although, Now!, I would wait until dry Mind you, I have been caught-out in some right down pours lately.
I do look after my rifles so well, I know you can't wrap them up in cotton wool, they are meant to be used and sooner or later they are going too get wet.

Normally, the stock comes of the rifle as water do's run under the stock and collects and this most certainly will rust the rifle out.
I use Ballistol as a wipe over oil and is also an excellent barrel cleaning product. However, as we know Air Rifle barrels are normally cleaned when groups open up.
The stock needs to be protected and CCL is the ticket. Makes the wood look stunning... Thanks too Geordie's... recommendation.
Don't mind the snow though, after it's fallen the countryside looks so picturesque after snow-fall, like today on the farm... :D
