Hi has anyone used bluing gel,how do you prep the barrel,many thanks

Used it a couple of times to repair scratches, for that its semi ok. For a complete barrel I would send it off to a company that can hot blue for one its a better finish and it lasts many times longer than the cold blue.
For small pins I polish the heads and slots and nitre blue them, its quick easy and dirt cheap.
If you do have to use cold blue the one I would recomend you stay away from is the Birchwood casey range, I have never had a decent result using the product.

i used it on a mk2 tx200 cocking arm and barrel ,

clean the part with some carb / brake cleaner ( spray it on a cloth ) and wipe down the metal . then put the gell on with a cloth just wipe it all over for 30-60 seconds then wipe off , polish with another dry cloth and you can repeat again and again untill you are happy with it, then use gun oil to wipe all over and it will look like new, do not wash it off, wipe it off with a dry cloth ;
it will not do any thing to the other blueing on your rifle , it only works on exsposed metal .
if its a bit rusty rub hard with a plastic scowling pad to get the rust off.

very easy to use , keep it off rubber and wood / plastic etc , just metal . try a small bit first , there is no technique just keep puting it on and wipe it off with in 30-60 seconds as it starts to dry and moving it around as you wipe it off . dry polish then at the end oily clothe wipe down , it will look like new,

There's a kit in my workshop marked "Black It",I bought some years ago and it's proved useful for refinishing small components and areas on an action machined to bare metal.One of the main active ingredients is selenium sulphate,but I don't view any of these products as a viable substitute for traditional hot salt bluing.
