all you need is oil like this for the out side of your rifle
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SMK-ABBEY-GUN ... 5af1abc411

and a small cloth to wipe your rifle and stock all over ,
keep the oily cloth in a sealy bag with the oil and just add a bit of oil to the same cloth every time you wipe down your rifle then use a dry cloth to wipe over just before you are going to use the rifle ,
ive had the same oily cloth ( cotton Tshirt arm bit ) for months and the same dry cloth ( the rest of the Tshirt ) .

Is this the same as 3in1? Would that suffice as that is a light oil?

I have used a bees wax on the stock before which doesn't make it too slippery but adds a layer of protection

If im laying a rifle up for any length of time (two or three weeks) I coat the metal work with a fine layer of Youngs 303 including putting a patch through the bore with the 303 on it. The bore wont need much but its the best protector I have found and it lasts for years. Wood I give a coat of wax with a little boiled linseed.
I never keep rifles in slips its a sure fire way to see rust. I have aluminum gun cases that have put VP90 sachets in just to be on the safe side. These are locked and stored in a secure room.
