How long do co2 cartridges last?

Just bought myself a Victory CP2, so I now have the full set of air guns, a pcp, springer, gas ram and now also co2.

Just wondered how long they last if not used, eg: years? and how long they last in the gun if not used, (eg: do they lose pressure?) I read somewhere to empty a cartridge rather than leave it in the gun? is that right?

NB: I know the issue with temperature affecting pressure, etc ....

In a 2 ft lb 177 target pistol they do about 50-60 shots.
On a higher power .22 you can probably halve it.
We always remove the CO2 bulbs after use rom our CP88 to save the seals but they are only pushed up against a rubber ring so they will empty over a few days anyway.
Some bulbs can have rougher end shape which will seal less effectively. Crosman with lube were my favourite but not cheap.
Out of a gun they last years so you can safely buy 100!

The question of lubricant in Co2 capsules is a often debated issue. I asked Crosman directly if they have any lubricant in their "Powerlets", and their answer was NO. This was after I cut one open (empty of course) to check, only to find it was red rusty inside. Umarex on the other hand, say their capsules do contain a small amount of lubricant. Having said all of that, I find that ASG capsules are easier to pierce, which is quite useful for guns which piece the end by screwing the reservoir cap on. We have 15 SMK QB78 rifles between our Scout Campsite and Target Shooting Club, so I know!

What a stitch up! Mind you it was in the last century that I moved from CO2 to air in my pistols. We use basic cheapest for the club, pretty sure they are Umarex.

All is not lost. Just put a drop of Silicon Oil on the tip of the capsule before inserting into the gun and hey presto, there's your lube.

Some people also use Crosman "Pelgun Oil", but I understand this is nothing more than ATF (auto transmission fluid). Yes, Pelgun Oil is an expensive way to buy ATF, but a small tube will last ages. But if you have some ATF, why not use it?
