Re: What do you shoot
We have shot some pests with it in our farmyard at some 50/60 yds and with the concrete wall of the cowbyre as a backstop. Quite effective I would say! We even found the bullet or what was left of it at the base of the wall.

Yes, a couple of my perms are on the FAC list as suitable , i am thinking of the 22 over the 17hmr as i can get a rifle for the right price and the amunition is a lot cheaper.
My RFD told me about the different tips, but not the slower velocities.
I will have to see what santa brings .

Hi Darran,
When applying for your FAC request both 22lr and 17HMR. They are two different tools completely. In fact any FEO worth his salt(some are some are not) would advise that you apply for both. If you apply for just 22lr at the time of application and you feel the need for an HMR at a later date you will have to apply for a variation and have another fee to pay. Best to request both at the time of your application.
The 22lr has been with us since the year blonk!!!. Its taken more game than any other calibre you would care to think of and still does. Incredibly versatile with the amount of ammunition available to the shooter it covers the needs of what most shooters require for pests/vermin/ground game. Unfortunately many RFD's only stock the standard sub sonic round because that is what most people feed their 22lr's,myself included and for good reason. Quiet, deadly accurate, cheap and very very effective against rabbits i maintain it is the best rabbiting tool any shooter can have in his cabinet. However there are times when even perhaps the standard sub sonic round may not suit the enviroment and i have just gained one such permission. A permission where i will need to tackle a rabbit problem with sub 12 air in some places, 22lr in others and in some parts of the ground i'll require the services of my HMR, simply because some of the ranges will require the "extra legs" of the HMR. On this permission i wil use the low powered 22lr rounds. I use the Winchester .22"long Z" rounds. Launching a 25 grain bullet as opposed to a standard sub with a 40 grain hollow point bullet these handy little rounds are round nose only but equally effective and fill the gap where perhaps FAC air would fill.
High velocity rounds in 22lr are by their very nature not as accurate as sub sonic rounds in 22lr. Some medium to high velocity rounds are and we and we have had reasonable results with Aguila HV but these are at the bottom end of high velocity as opposed to a 22lr "stinger ".
If the need to stretch out past 100 yards presents itself that is the time to reach for the HMR. So that is why i would recommend you apply for both.
Some forces allow HMR for Fox. I have my HMR conditioned for Fox where it simply is'nt safe to use my centre fire on some of our permissions. An HMR is not a dedicated Fox round. Ranges must be kept to a sensible level i.e under 100yards but within those ranges it is more than capable with careful bullet placement.
Cheers,
ATB,
Pat

Re: What do you shoot
Thank you Pat G, some very usefull information there, At the moment we are awaiting a move into a property more suitable for the wife and her wheelchair ,
and once sorted i will them start talking to my local FEO and RFD regarding obtaining a FAC.
Until them i feel it would be a lot of messing around applying for the FAC and fitting the relevant cabinet's, and then having to up root and change details
for the new property. But i will take into your advice for requesting the 17hmr as well as the 22lr,
and a shotty as a 410 with the right load is a great gun for those rats and close range bunny's.
