Big day on the birds tomorrow!

Tue Jan 05, 2016 11:28 pm

My annual paid day on the pheasants/partridge tomorrow.
Upped to 200 birds this year so should get plenty of action, weather looks promising too.
I bagged 7 the first year and 9 last year so I will be dissapointed if I don't break double figures!
Especially looking forward to the sloe gin/champagne at elevenses :P 8-)

Hope you achieve your goal. I'm sure you will enjoy it whatever the weather.
Is it a driven day?

Hope the day went well Paul. My last day of this season on 20th January. To say the weather has been so bad the birds have been flying really well. Our last bag was 73 with 7 guns out and the time before that 131 with 9 guns. we,ve had some cracking bags. :D

I had a great day, picked 10 dropped 14. It was a 200 bird day and we did that in 4 drives! No bad considering we bagged 12 on the first drive!
Damn those partridges are quick!

Glad you had a good day Paul. Can't beat it can you. I love the shooting season. Starting on the Partridge in September through to January on the Pheasants it seems to go so quickly but then seems to come around again so quick!!
Nowt worse when birds don't get picked though. I was on a Partridge day in September and the whole team of guns all agreed we'd shot over 130 for only the pickers up to pick 102 if i remember correctly. Strange but the dogs just could'nt seem to get the scent. It happens.
Tell you what though but believe it or not Partridges don't fly as quick as Pheasants mate ;) The main difference is that a Partridge can jink and dive where a Pheasant takes a more straight line.
A common reason why many inexperienced Game shots miss Partridges is that they think they are flying faster than a Pheasant and tend to over compensate and give the bird too much lead resulting in shooting in front of the bird. Something to remember for next time Paul. Give it a go. You may be pleasantly surprised :)
