Is it the report from the barrel that's noisy, or is it from the action, or is it a ping from the cylinder?
Have you checked the power? Well over or well under spec. I can't see this having anything to do with seals except perhaps a bad leak from the breech seal, which should be easy to detect.
Comparing with the your S400 you would expect the .177 to be noisier than a .22 with the same barrel length.
Is the .22 carbine and the .177 full length? Carbine will be noisier at same power.

thanks for the reply tony c they are both carbines if I get time over the weekend work permitting will borrow a chronograph off a mate and fire some shots off and get back to you once again thanks for the advice

If you do decide to do it yourself-its not that hard. There are some some good strip down guides on YouTube that I followed to do mine, the 1st time i did it.
1 thing i should have done to make it A little bit easier was to take photograph at each step to remind me how it goes back together HA HA.
