Old. 22's

Sun Oct 18, 2015 8:48 am

Have been plinking with a Mk4 BSA Airsporter ( 5.56 mm bore ) I was gifted and not been impressed with the accuracy of modern pellets.
Sourced some ' Defiant ' Vintage 5.56 and used them yesterday for the first time.
I was pleasently surprised to shoot 1" groups @ 20m despite the old 4 x scope and the trigger being similar to a bonnet release on a mk1 Ford Transit .
They weren't cheap but I don't intend to shoot loads.
The rifle was bought new in the mid 1970's and has been used outside the previously owners garden. Excellent condition but has never been serviced. With a bit of fettling I might have a go a crack at close range squiggels with it.
Delighted to eventually get my hands on an Airsporter , they were a posh kids rifle, we had lowly milbro's and meteor's.

Hi. I cannot help with a pellet that I would recommend, But my BSA mercury that I had from new 1976 ish. I used to use Eley Wasp how ever the Wasp .22 are now rubbish in a true .22 barrel. They do not even measure 5.56 now. I have two tins of them which I can not used in any of my rifles. The old wasp was really good in my Mercury. At the moment I have not found a pellet for this rifle other than H&N FTT 5.53. but they are not as good as the few old Wasp that I still have.

Recently opened a tin of moderns wasps and the finish was shocking. Pieces of burr hanging to the skirts. Can't understand why a company would go to all the trouble of making a product that looked so poor and expect it to sell.
I am led to believe H & N make Valiant Vintage pellets .
