S510 Hammer

I am regulating my S510 carbine. it's an FAC .177. I ordered a lighter spring and std hammer off John Knibbs. When I compared the hammer that came out of my gun with the std one they were different. The std one was longer, and felt heavier, which in my mind would lend towards more power. I want to set the gun up for around 11 fpe.

So can anyone shed light on this? The spring I got was lighter, so that will be going in. I hope photo comes through. The Std hammer is at the rear, with current hammer in front. Diff in length is approx 10 mm.

Didn't know about them. Just had a look though and which hammer is for FAC and which is for 12 ft/lb?

Not being able to post pictures makes it hard. The one in my gun is shorter with a broader striking end, where the std striker from knibbs is longer, and striking face much slimmer.

Any tips on how to remove the bushes from the hammer?

If they are bronze then the normal engineers method is tap in a thread and wind in a slide hammer shaft. etc.

If you can be bothered making the tools.

You might be able to drift them out.

I can't give you the answer to your question but it would be wrong to assume a heavier hammer gives more power. The energy of the hammer is the key, and this depends on the combination of hammer and spring - it's a complex relationship - matching the valve spring, hammer weight and main spring to minimise hammer bounce, maximise efficiency and get the right power. With the same spring a heavier hammer will accelerate more slowly, which may give lower power.

If you can't get an answer in this forum you might call Air Arms and ask for some technical advice. They should be able to tell you the difference between the 12 ft lb and FAC setups.

Might pay to have a look at Robert Lane antibounce hammers, I have one I fitted in a BTAS S510 works ok.Rog

And thanks Tonyc, if i get some more bushes I might try the fac hammer again. It just occured to me that when I weighed the hammers, one had the bushes and the other didn't. So maybe they are the same weight, but one longer.

Well, to cut a long story short, I've had a great result with my reg install. I will give you the summarised version as I know I'm not breaking any new ground here, but what I've done is repeatable and you certainly don't need great skills to do this.
Started with an S510, FAC, 177 carbine. Using AA 8.4 grn.
From a 200 bar fill, down to 150, I got 40 shots that went from 778 fps down to 698. Basically each shot went down about 2 fps.

Got a HUMA reg for low power, a std s510 hammer and 12 ft/lb hammer spring and swapped these over for the FAC hammer and spring.
Drilled the breather hole in the tank, cut the brass pot to fit plenum, I ended up setting the reg to 65 bar. And being an FAC, it has the power adjuster. I have kept this open fully as the nice big transfer port is needed for the low power.

So now from a 180 bar fill down to 65 bar I got 79 consistent shots. High 780, low 761 fps, with an avg of 769. After shot 80 the fps dropped steadily without any spike in power when it came off the reg.
I expect the consistency to improve as the reg settles in and can even turn the reg down further or will experiment with the hammer spring.
So I'm really happy with that. I can fill to 200 bar or even slightly more and pretty sure I can get 100 shots per fill from my carbine at 11 ft/lb.
