What is an air stripper

Thu May 11, 2017 4:34 pm

Seen these things that look like silencers / moderators with various side cut outs, what are they and what do they do?

Thanx

They reduce the muzzle blast behind the pellet. The reduced air is said to prevent turbulence destabilising the pellet.

Does that also mean the pellet has less power or travels at slower speed?

No, the pellet has already left the barrel it just stabilises the air behind the pellet.

An Air Stripper has one or two cones which of course have a hole through them to allow the pellet to exit. the air behind is channelled over the cone and expelled through the ports on the sides of the device. On a sub 12FPE rifle I very much doubt they would have a serious effect. on some the cones are movable to tune the effect, wether it does effect the round by stripping the air is debateable , or is just moving mass forwards/backward which will have an effect on the barrel harmonics of a floating barrel. on a higher powered rifle the stripper could help with muzzle flip. My Ev2 has the std AA stripper on it, I would not be temped to buy an aftermarket item, the money saved could be spent on pellets and practice, which does have an effect.

I have 2 x S200s. One with an air stripper and one without.

I set them both to the same power without anything on the muzzle and then put the air stripper on one of them. The power remained the same but the POI was elevated.

I then put an AA sound moderator on the other one. The POI dropped. Make of this what you will. I am not sure myself but the rifle with the stripper feels sharper to shoot with tighter grouping.

PS - The stripper is one of the best that was available - hand-crafted by UK Neil.

interesting post Raj. I would be interested to see the results of the one with the air stripper. I do admit to being sceptical and of the opinion that if you have just forked out X amount of money, that you will believe/placebo effect call it what you will, that this has actually made a difference. we are aware of the theory surrounding them so a test which would lay this to rest so to speak is weighed pellets, benchrest, indoors same fill pressure if rifle unregulated. Test one as it is set up, now the same rifle with the ports taped up to stop the stripping effect, of course not too much weight as this will effect. the POI is not relevant, but the groupsize is.
Gary.

I would love to do the test myself. Will need an indoor facility that I will try and find.

You will also get different results depending on the rifle used. A spring would have more effect than a pop. Also lock time won't help
