This happened with me for real ! Back in India when I was about 19. It was friendly restaurant owner. I turned up for dinner, saw him struggling with a staff shortage, rolled my sleeves up and started helping. Before long, it became 'normal' for me to do waiting, chop veg in the kitchen, take a customer's order, manning the till etc. Just for a laugh ... while my own meal was being sorted.
