I find the thread an interesting observation enumerating a few of my pet language peeves. I believe part of the problem lies in lax education systems as well as in lazy people. If you off a horse it's a great deal of work to dig the hole to bury it. It's a much better idea to sell the horse or even give it away. It then becomes someone else's problem. Besides you no longer have to store hay for the winter.
