Can you test fire the rifle without the guard being attached (saftey issues aside) or does the rear trigger guard bolt have to be in position?

My bunny hunting is static now, staking out warrens.
It's a toss up between a strap wearing the lever bluing and your fingers wearing it, I guess.

Has anyone tried adding a strap to the end of underlever, to help release from the detent? Repeatedly pinching the lever with thumb and forefinger is hard on the fingers. I'd like to lighten my trigger, can you lighten the trigger pull, using the most rearward screw without this affecting the first stage and second stage settings?
