Brass will naturally tarnish with time.
Your choices are to either polish it when it does, or polish it and then clear varnish it to exclude air.
Varnish will also fade and discolour over time. It can also chip.
I would just re-polish as required.

A bit of info that may help. On our club's 10mtr range we have 1/4" thick steel plates behind the target holders and they get bent eventually. We hammer it back probably around once per year. Card holders obviously have to be capable of taking the odd hit but the actual backstop has to be reall...

Most of the cylinders are made by Faber but the MDE valve set up is a good one.
The "Slow fill" one can make life easier, especially when newly filled.

Hi Duncs,
Followed your advice but instead of getting you to do the work I've sawn the bugger in half so it fits in the bin better
It was only an old Theoben Elan anyway
